Seven Simple Steps to Container Gardening

1) Choose the right plants! You won't have to spend as much time caring for your plants if your choose plants that are suited to your environmental conditions and gardening style. Let the Floracle help you find which plants are right for you.

2) Get creative…The fun of container gardening is the freedom to move plants around and mix plants together in interesting combinations. If something isn't working for you, pull it out…if you want something else, plant it! Check out the Design Queen's Inspiration Gallery for ideas.

3) Don't use dirt: Potting soil has more air space and will give your plants better drainage than ground soil can in containers. Mix a dry, time-release fertilizer into potting soil when planting to get your plants off to a good start. Try Windowbox's Don't Call It Dirt!

4) Water: Test the soil in your containers every day . If it's dry an inch below the surface, add a little water. If the soil is wet, pour off any excess water. Self-watering containers are a great option if you can't water your plants on a regular basis.

5) Look out for pests by inspecting plants regularly for fungus, insects, bugs, etc. Remove any diseased or dying leaves. Spray insects with soapy water or other natural repellants to get rid of them.

6) Prune: Don't be afraid to cut or trim plants to keep their shape and encourage growth. Just leave at least 2/3 of the original plant intact so it'll have enough surface area to absorb sunlight. Pinch off faded flowers regularly to encourage more blooms on annual plants.

7) Be attentive, show your plants a little love, and before you know it, you'll have a beautiful garden that doesn't require a lot of work!
