Window Boxes: Spring’s Inside Job

Even if the weather is snowy and cold outside, it’s not too soon to jump start your spring planting: inside! All you need are some basic tools such as window boxes, liners, growing medium, a good light source such as fluorescent or grow lights, and you’re on your way. Then, once your plantings are ready to move outside, be they flowers or small vegetables, they will be stalwart and sturdy from their TLC beginnings. Simply move the entire window box planter or liner outdoors for an instant spring garden.

Easy Beginnings For Window Boxes

Starting small vegetables and herbs is quite easy with some basic equipment. Enriched soil or growing medium is basic. If starting your indoor plantings from seeds, surefire containers to use include egg cartons or crates, small peat pots, or some seeds can be planted directly into the window box or liner if directions allow. Just fill planter boxes with soil and/or plant medium and bury seeds according to packet directions, typically 1/4 inch or more from the surface. Water sufficiently per seed requirements. Keep under either fluorescent lights or grow lights to germinate.

Once sprouts have poked their heads above the surface for at least an inch or more, they can be transplanted into your larger window box container. They will continue their growth pattern until spring arrives. They should be robust enough to move the entire planter outdoors, and well after any risk of a hard frost has passed.

Be sure and check seed packets for indoor grow timing. Most seeds and sprouted plants have gestation periods and ready-to-transplant guidelines on packets. If your packets don’t, either check the internet for planting timelines or call your local nursery for guidance. Timelines for inside seed germination and growth range from three to four weeks, on up to twelve to fourteen weeks, depending on plant variety.
